A lot of our buyers on Etsy, reach our shop through our listings. Some of them even purchase items without visiting the shop itself. They can get all the information they need, from the listing page. They reach those listings in many different ways – Search, Browse, Social media, Trending page and more.
So optimizing your listing SEO is a crucial task you really want to excel in, and you can do it by following some easy step by step tips, which over time will become an integrated part of your daily shop management process.
1. Write it down
Take a good look at your item and write between 3-5 relevant words about it.
For example – what is it? Who is it for? What material is it made of? Color? Style?

2. Research your words
Go to Etsy’s search bar on the home page, and start typing the first word from your list, without clicking on the space button after. Etsy will automatically complete your word, with the most popular searches relevant to your item.

Then, click on the space button, to see whether any of those words changes, or any additional words come up. Write the relevant phrases on your paper sheet. If you have time and patience, do the same on Google search bar in order to expand your search.
Click on one of the first relevant phrase from Etsy’s automated completion options to see how many results are there for that specific search.

These number of results is important. You don’t want the number to be too low (under 500) or too high (over 100,000) .If it is too low, it means that the search is not popular, not a lot of people are looking for that item, or are using these keywords in order to find that item on Etsy. A very high result is also not good, it means that there are a lot of items under that specific search, and your chances to come up in the first 1-5 pages are slim, and it would be very hard to stay there long term. It means that the competition is extremely difficult. Write these results numbers on your paper sheet, next to the relevant keyword, in order to keep track. It would be useful later when we composite our item’s title.
Continue your search by Scrolling down to the bottom of the same search result page, where you might find more suggestions from Etsy, for related keywords phrases and popular searches.

Look at your final list of strong keywords and relevant search phrases, and pick 3-5 best ones (number of search results between 10,000 – 50,000) describing your item.
The first 3-4 words of your title are the most important ones in terms of SEO, and appearance. When your items come up in search results, only the first part of the title is shown, and it is very important it would state exactly what the item is.

Write the final title on your paper sheet and read it to yourself, to make sure it makes sense. For example: Wooden teething ring , wood toy for baby , Crochet tassel toy for Toddlers .
3. Last but not least
Product description – Repeat the first part of your title.
The best advice I got when I first started, was to write my descriptions as if my buyers cannot see the photos. You must include the materials, colors, size, care and handling and maybe a phrase or two of marketing lines. It is important to also add some backlinks to complimentary items from your shop, and even a link back to your shop. It will increase the chances for your customers to stay longer in your shop, keep them intrigued to look at more items, and hopefully eventually buy an item.
Add 13 tags. First start by coping the keyword phrases from your title in the same order, then add the rest of the keywords from that same list you have made at the beginning of this tutorial.
Etsy allows you to add 13 tags to each item – be sure to use all of them!!! This is how your buyers can find your items in search results. The tags are limited to 20 notes each so make sure you use them correctly. Think about your target market, and how THEY would look for your items or similar products.
CHACHING!!!!
